The RiJe Cup is an innovative drinking cup specifically designed to improve hydration and increase independence, especially for those with severe swallowing difficulties, such as dysphagia and motor disorders. This cup is the result of close collaboration with Speech Therapists and Occupational Therapists, promoting safe swallowing of liquids, thereby supporting the user in rehabilitation and independence.

The most distinguishing feature of the RiJe Cup Grande is its patented sip-regulation system. This system ensures a predetermined amount of liquid is automatically released into the cup. As soon as the user takes a sip and returns the cup to its upright position, it refills within 2 to 3 seconds. This unique system makes the RiJe Cup the only tool suitable for both thin and nectar-thick liquids, according to IDDSI Levels 0, 1, and 2.

Moreover, the adjustable volume capability is essential. It offers the ability to create a tailored sip size, which not only enhances satisfaction in quenching thirst but also improves hydration. With this, either the user or a medical professional can easily increase or decrease the swallow amount, depending on the needs and the stage of the disorder, whether it's for rehabilitation or a degenerative condition.

The RiJe Cup is not only functional but also ergonomically designed. With large handles that are comfortable and provide a good grip, it makes the cup easy to handle for users. The nose cut-out is strategically positioned so the user can drink without tilting the head backward. This is especially useful for individuals with neck pain, neck complaints, or limited neck movement. And for those who prefer a straw, the cup can also be used with one.

The cup has a capacity of 250 ml and a dosing mechanism range of 50 to 250 ml. It's made from BPA-free polypropylene and comes with food-grade silicone O-rings. In addition, it's dishwasher-safe and can hold both cold and hot drinks up to 32°C. The cup is available in two colors: red and aqua.

Lastly, it's important to emphasize that the RiJe Cup is designed for individuals dealing with various conditions such as stroke, Parkinson's, ALS, MLS, Cerebral Palsy, head, neck, and chest cancer, and injuries. Before purchasing the RiJe Dysphagia Cup, it is recommended to consult with a medical professional, such as a doctor, speech therapist, or occupational therapist.

RiJe Cup with Thin and Thick Liquids

People with swallowing disorders, also known as dysphagia, sometimes have specific needs when it comes to the thickness or viscosity of the liquids they consume. Liquids that are too thin or too thick can pose problems and even be dangerous for them. To help these individuals, the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) was established, classifying liquids based on their thickness.

What is viscosity?

Viscosity is a quantifiable description of a liquid's ability to flow. In everyday terms, it's often described as "thickness". For context, honey has a much higher viscosity than water, meaning honey is "thicker" than water.

Classification according to IDDSI

IDDSI has categorized liquids into five different levels of thickness or viscosity:

IDDSI Liquid Thickness Category Level IDDSI Liquid Thickness Category Name Other commonly used Liquid names
0 Thin Liquid Thin Liquid
1 Slightly Thick Liquid Light Nectar
2 Mildly Thick Liquid Nectar Thick Liquids
3 Moderately Thick Liquid Honey Thick Liquids
4 Extremely Thick Liquid Jelly or Puddings

In the food and beverage industry and among speech therapy professionals, there are also usual names for these liquids, such as "Light Nectar" for "Slightly Thick Liquid" and "Honey Thick Liquids" for "Moderately Thick Liquid". The table above offers a cross-reference between the IDDSI names and commonly used names.

RiJe® Cup and its function

The RiJe® Cup is specially designed for people with swallowing problems and works with the first three categories of liquids: Thin Liquids (0), Slightly Thick Liquids (1), and Mildly Thick Liquids (2). This cup is equipped with 3 rotatable plugs to deliver controlled amounts (small sips) of each type of liquid. It's important to note that you should always use only 1 plug at a time. It is not advisable to use 2 or 3 plugs simultaneously.

With the RiJe® Cup, patients with dysphagia can safely consume the correct viscosity of liquid, contributing to their well-being and health.
