Teach children more about their native birds!
These homemade hanging bird feeders are the ideal way to introduce children to our native bird life. Hang the feeders in the school garden or outside your nursery.

The children can watch out of the window as the birds come and get food:

• what kind of birds are coming to the bird feeders?
• which birds are eating which food?
• which birds come at what time to get food?
• how do the birds behave when getting the food?

Project work could include supplementing the food mix with berries collected from hawthorn, elder, sea buckthorn, rowan and sloe, grains from various types of cereal, seeds from grasses, burs, stinging nettles, thistles, dock and dandelion, pumpkin seeds, beechnuts and also walnuts and hazelnuts.

Important:

When collecting your own grains from cereals and grasses, make sure these are not affected by a fungus (Claviceps purpurea "ergot fungus"). This fungus is poisonous for birds. It looks similar to the cereal grains but is larger and dark grey or even black in colour. Consequently, it is better to use the seed mix supplied for birds.

Feeding with no risk.

The birds can land easily on the hanging bird feeders and fly off again. There is no chance of the birds getting caught on these homemade feeders e.g. in contrast to birdfeeders using plastic netting.

Tip:

Birds are wild animals and thus used to seasonal changes in the food on offer. So the winter months are best for hanging up your homemade bird feeders.
